Three held after four-county pursuit that began in East Bay

PITTSBURG — Two men and a woman were taken into custody after fleeing a traffic stop and leading multiple agencies on a four-county chase, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol said Pittsburg police tried to stop a Toyota pickup truck that fled officers at high speed just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

But officers were able to deploy a Starchase tracking device, consisting of a GPS tag that functions as a beacon that can be fired from a patrol vehicle-mounted cannon, before ending their pursuit.

That beacon allowed a Contra Costa Sheriff’s helicopter and a CHP Golden Gate Division Air-37 airplane to follow from above at a distance.
