Wilmington man shot by stray bullet from police shooting sues city of L.A., officers

A Wilmington man who was struck by a stray bullet when a gun battle erupted outside his apartment between police and a reckless driving suspect is suing the city of Los Angeles and three police officers.

Israel Hernandez, 48, says he was left out of work for months with mounting medical bills and constant pain after he was shot in the leg on Feb. 2, 2018. He heard gunfire that afternoon and got up to close the front door of his apartment about 25 yards away from the shootout on Fries Avenue and Opp Street when he realized he was struck.

The 24-page lawsuit filed last month in U.S. District Court seeks damages on claims of civil rights violations, battery, negligence and false imprisonment.
