HOUSTON — Four Houston Police officers were shot when suspected drug dealers opened fire on police as they served a search warrant in a southeast Houston neighborhood Monday evening. Two suspects were killed in the shootout. A fifth officer was hurt while scrambling for cover.

The shooting, which began as soon as officers breached the front door of the house, was reported at around 5 p.m. in the 7800 block of Harding Street. Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said the officers were wounded while serving a search warrant as part of a narcotics task force. Police had received several tips from residents that black tar heroin was being sold out of the home.

Acevedo said the officers announced themselves while breaching the front door and immediately were met by a barrage of gunfire.
