The death of a K-9 officer is felt acutely throughout the community

In law enforcement, K-9 units — trained police dogs and their handlers — are a vital link to keeping citizens safe. With their highly developed skills of scent, sight, sound and speed, K-9 officers possess an ability to stop criminals that human police personnel simply can’t match.

When a police dog is injured or killed in the line of duty, what follows is sadness that pierces the soul.

On Nov. 4, two months ago, police and residents of St. Clair Shores were shocked and grief-stricken when Axe, a police dog on the force since 2016, was killed by a suspect in a chase.
