EDGECOMBE COUNTY, N.C. – The name of an Eastern Carolina sheriff’s deputy who was killed in the line of duty Sunday night has been released.
The Highway Patrol says Deputy David Manning was pursuing a vehicle on Highway 111 about three miles south of Tarboro when he lost control of his patrol car in a curve.
The 24-year-old deputy was thrown from his vehicle when it hit an oncoming Chevy pickup truck head-on. The two people inside the pickup truck had minor injuries, according to troopers.
Sheriff Clee Atkinson says Manning noticed a traffic violation and was attempting to stop the vehicle. He says that vehicle crashed two-tenths of a mile from where the deputy wrecked his vehicle and the driver took off running.
The sheriff said after an extensive search, the driver wasn’t found.
The deputy graduated from basic law enforcement training in November from Edgecombe Community College. He started working for the sheriff’s office on November 8th.
